Kedron is an old fashioned jonquil hybrid we are happy to have back in our catalog this year! It is an old fashioned selection with dark yellow petals and an orange cup that was bred by Willis Wheeler, a mid 20th century daffodil breeder and officer in the American Daffodil Association. Like most jonquils, it is a tough, dependable bloomer for Southern gardens.
Blooms: Each stem carries one or two flowers about 2¾" across, with warm apricot-yellow petals and a flat, deep orange cup. The stems stand about 12" tall, and the blooms open in mid-spring. Like other jonquils, the flowers are sweetly fragrant and make lovely cut flowers.
Planting: Plant the bulb like most daffodils in 6+ hours of winter sun, well-drained soil, avoid standing water, and avoid too much competition. Plant the bulbs about 2-3 times the height of the bulb deep (so if the bulb is 1 inch tall, plant it 2-3 inches deep). If you are farther north and get very cold during the winter, you may want to plant it about 4-6 inches deep. Space the holes about 3-6 inches apart, and for a more natural looking display, consider planting 2-3 bulbs in each hole.
Landscaping Tip: Narcissus bloom at different times so as one daffodil is ending its bloom time another is just beginning. At about a foot tall, 'Kedron' is a nice fit for the front or middle of a border, where its fragrance is easy to enjoy.
Animals: Like all daffodils, 'Kedron' is not bothered by deer, rabbits, or squirrels.
