A rare paperwhite that does it all. 'Ariel' is another paperwhite variety from Israel, and it is still one of the harder ones to find here in the States. Each bulb sends up more than two stems that shoot up offering a nice solid bouquet of flowers — a single stem can carry from 4-8 or more snowy white blooms. Flower stalks are generally stronger than those of the most popular paperwhites, so they stand tall without flopping. It also reportedly has a nicer fragrance than the old fashioned paperwhites, so be sure to let us know what you think of the fragrance.

Each pack contains 10 bulbs, sized 14/15 cm — a little smaller than our other forcing paperwhites, and that is exactly why we love them: the perfect size for anywhere. Tuck more bulbs into each pot for a fuller forced bouquet, or stretch them further when planting en masse in the landscape. A hardy selection, too — in the South (zones 8-10) they can live outside in the garden.

  • When to plant: (Blooms appear about 4-6 weeks after planting — 'Ariel' tends to bloom a touch earlier than 'Ziva')
  • Count back about 5 weeks from when you want flowers — Thanksgiving tables, Christmas mantels, or New Year's celebrations.
  • Where to plant:
  • In pots indoors for fresh blooming flowers on your holiday table or guest room — you can grow them this way even in zones 3-7.
  • Outdoors in planters, to define borders, or en masse for dramatic displays. If you have a bare spot in the garden or empty planters from summer flowers, use these to add color and fragrance.
  • How to plant:
  • No special soil and no chilling required. Plant in a container with drainage holes or in well-drained garden soil, in full sun, and keep the soil lightly moist.
  • If forcing indoors, turn the pot daily so the stems grow straight, and water when the soil begins to dry.
  • Plant with colorful pansies or other annuals at the base to add immediate color and layers to your pots.

Here's a side-by-side comparison of the three most popular paperwhite narcissus cultivars. While all three are Narcissus papyraceus selections, they have noticeably different habits.
