Habranthus robustus 'Russell Manning' (A Pink Rain Lily).

Perhaps a little taller, a little darker pink, a little more robust than the normal Habranthus robustus. We're excited to offer this option and will let the gardeners themselves decide on the difference in form and habit of our favorite pink rain lily! There are many rain lilies that bloom all across the world, but few put on the show of Habranthus robustus. These larger rain lily bulbs quickly clump and spread, offering a showy display in an otherwise dormant summer garden, and they don't mind our Southern heat or humidity one bit. We are selling these in 4 inch pots.

Blooms: Soft pink, trumpet-shaped flowers about 3 inches long sit on stems roughly 8-12 inches tall above narrow, strap-like foliage. This pink rain lily will bloom 4 to 6 times in one summer, starting around late spring and repeating through summer, with flushes of blooms popping up a few days after a good rain or a deep watering. Each flower only lasts a couple of days, but an established clump will keep sending up new ones. The light pink showy displays make great borders often seen from afar.

Planting: Each 4" pot can go straight into the ground. Plant the whole clump at the same level it is growing in the pot, so the bulb necks sit just at or slightly below the soil surface, and space the pots about 6-8 inches apart so the clumps have room to spread. They can be seen performing in shady areas and in full sun, though they bloom best with at least a half day of sun. They are happy in most well-drained soils; just avoid spots where water stands. Water them in well after planting. You can plant them any time from spring through early fall. They are hardy in zones 8-10 and often in protected spots in zone 7.

Landscaping Tip: Rain lilies look best planted in drifts rather than one here and one there. Tuck them along walkways and borders, around a mailbox, or under the edge of large trees, and let them clump up. They also do great in pots on the porch. After blooming, they form seed pods that you can scatter where you want more.
