Paperwhites for the garden! These are our specialty for garden planting and naturalizing. 'Ziva' isn't just for forcing indoors—plant these bulbs in the ground, and they'll come back year after year in the South (USDA Zones 7–10) These are a great size - and price- to plant in masse outdoors.

If you look at the pictures, you will see how we like to plant paperwhites en masse for the holidays. They are part of our "annual" garden beds that we trade out seasonally. "Annual" beds can be small and take little work, but give you a fresh look every season. Whether you want them in a specific spot for just a season or you want drifts of fragrant white blooms each winter, these perfectly fit the bill.

These bulbs are slightly smaller than the ones we recommend for forcing in pots, making them the perfect size and value for planting en masse outdoors. For Thanksgiving, Christmas or New Year's blooms, plant with about 1 inch of soil covering the bulbs 5-6 weeks before you want the blooms to appear.

Each pack contains 25 bulbs, sized 13/14 cm — a large landscaping grade (a little smaller than the 15/17 cm bulbs we offer for forcing). More bulbs for less, which is exactly what you want when you are filling a bed, lining a walk, or naturalizing a sweep of garden. Can you use these for forcing? Absolutely!

Paperwhites are THE holiday flower. Their scent fills the air inside or outside. This paperwhite variety originally comes from Israel and thrives in the South. 'Ziva' carries several large flowers on each stem with a strong spicy scent. And yes — if you have a favorite pot, these will force just like their bigger siblings: plant about 5-7 weeks before your desired day of display.

Paperwhite bulbs, also known as Narcissus tazetta papyraceus, are a type of daffodil native to the Mediterranean region — mild wet winters and hot dry summers, essentially the climate of the Deep South and the Gulf Coast. Plant them here and you are giving them exactly what they evolved for.

• When to plant: (Blooms will appear about 5-7 weeks after planting)
• Plant the beginning of October for Thanksgiving blooms.
• Plant during the first or second week of November for fresh Christmas blooms.
• Plant at Thanksgiving for New Year's blooms.
• In the garden, plant once — after the first year they settle onto their own winter schedule and multiply.

• Where to plant:
• Outdoors en masse for dramatic displays — beds, borders, under deciduous trees, or that bare spot left by summer flowers.
• Full winter sun and well-drained soil are all they ask.

• How to plant:
• Cover with about 1" of soil, water in, and let the season do the rest. No chilling required.
• Let the foliage die down naturally in spring — that is how the bulbs recharge and multiply for next winter's show.
• Nothing eats them — narcissus are left alone by deer, squirrels, voles, and rabbits.
• Plant with colorful pansies or other annuals near them to add immediate color.
