The Narcissus 'Pacific Rim' has a fun and attractive twist on the more traditional yellow daffodil. The petals and cup are both a bright sun yellow, but the cup has a red "rim" around it. It is a sunny, easygoing daffodil that brightens up a spring bed, a border, or a vase on the kitchen table.
Blooms: The Narcissus 'Pacific Rim' blooms in mid-spring. Clear yellow petals surround a shallow, bowl-shaped yellow cup edged with an orange-red band. This large bulb (14+ cm) is considered large-cupped, with each bloom measuring about 3-4" across on 14-18" stems. It is hardy in zones 3-8 and makes a lovely cut flower.
Planting: Plant the bulb like most daffodils in 6+ hours of winter sun, well-drained soil, avoid standing water, and avoid too much competition. Plant the bulbs about 2-3 times the height of the bulb deep (so if the bulb is 1 inch tall, plant it 2-3 inches deep). If you are farther north and get very cold during the winter, you may want to plant it about 4-6 inches deep. Space the holes about 3-6 inches apart, and for a more natural looking display, consider planting 2-3 bulbs in each hole.
Landscaping Tip: Narcissus bloom at different times so as one daffodil is ending its bloom time another is just beginning. We like to say that "there is a bulb that blooms every week of the year in warmer climates." Plant 'Pacific Rim' in drifts alongside earlier and later daffodils so your garden has color for months.
After Blooming: Let the foliage stay in place until it turns yellow and dies back on its own. The leaves are feeding the bulb for next year's blooms, so resist the urge to cut or braid them early.
