Zephyranthes 'Prairie Sunset' is one of those rain lilies that makes you stop and look twice. Its warm, sunset-colored blooms will appear 3 to 5 times in one summer, not minding the heat or humidity one bit. They can be seen performing in partially shady areas and in full sun. These larger rain lily bulbs quickly clump and spread, offering a showy display in an otherwise dormant summer garden, and they make great borders that can be seen from afar. They are very drought tolerant - perfect for low water/xeriscape areas!

Blooms: The blooms open from deep pink buds into soft, salmon-coral flowers with a warm golden glow, and they fade to a blush pink on the second day, so a clump in bloom shows off a whole sunset of colors at once. Expect flushes of bloom from about July through September, usually a couple of days after a good rain or a deep watering. The plants stay low, about 12 inches tall, and the clumps slowly widen to about 2 feet across over the years.

Planting: Plant the bulbs about 2-3 times the height of the bulb deep (so if the bulb is 1 inch tall, plant it 2-3 inches deep) and about 3-4 inches apart, or plant 2-3 bulbs in each hole for a more natural-looking clump. Give them a sunny spot for the most flowers (they will take a little afternoon shade) in well-drained soil, and avoid areas with standing water. Spring through summer is the ideal time to plant. They are perennial in the ground in zones 7-10.

Landscaping Tip: Use them along the front of a border, along a walkway, or in a rock garden where you can see the colors change up close. They look wonderful mixed with other rain lilies and with low, drought-tolerant perennials.
